San Juan de los Reyes
SAN JUAN DE LOS REYES MONASTERY.
The monastery of San Juan de los Reyes (1477 – 1526) It was built for the Franciscan order under the patronage of Queen Isabella the First of Castile. Its intention was to convert it into a royal mausoleum in commemoration of the battle of the bull and the birth of Prince Juan. It is one of the most important examples of Elizabethan Gothic style in Spain. and the most important building chosen by the Catholic Monarchs was designed by Juan Guas, the first person to hold the title of royal architect in 1926 It was declared a historical-artistic monument of national interest..
CHURCH
The temple dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist was completed in 1495 and it has an Elizabethan style, it only has one nave with chapels between them with buttresses and a raised choir at the foot.
The building is decorated with numerous elements and symbols that have referenced the Catholic Monarchs, as well as the eagle of San Juan. The sculptor Egas Cueman collaborated decisively in the decoration of the complex.
The altarpiece of the Church was made by Francisco de Comontes. In it we find the following scenes:
– Jesus on the way to Calvary.
– the descent.
– Saint Helena with the miracles of the Cross.
THE CLOISTER
The cloister is considered one of the Spanish jewels of the transitional Gothic to the Renaissance. It has been restored several times. The Church communicates with the cloister on the south side through two doors located in the transept and in the nave.
Of the two cloisters that it had in the Collegiate Church of San Juan, only the oldest is preserved, it is a cloister of 2 floors and square. Of the doors located in the lower cloister, the one that communicates with the Church at the height of the transept and those of access to the stairs and the sacristy stand out.
