Museums of the Councils

The Museum of the Councils of Toledo and Visigoth Culture is one of the most important points of the monumental complex of Toledo.. It was inaugurated in 1969 and is located inside the Church of San Román.

The museum contains several archaeological collections from the 6th century, VII and VIII, that show some of the historical-artistic vestiges of what was the ancient capital of the Visigoth kingdom of Toledo.

We will be able to see summits, capitals, relieves, epigraphic samples, painting documents and goldsmithing. The grave goods found in the Necropolis of Carpio de Tajo are also exhibited., as well as excellent reproductions of the votive crowns from the Guarrazar Treasure.

– Closing days: Every Monday.

– Reduced entry: 1 €
Groups of 10 or more people with an arranged visit. Holders of Youth Card or EU equivalent.
– Free entrance: Wednesday evening. Sundays. 18 and 31 of May. pensioners, unemployed, minors 16 years and older 65, teachers, official tourist guides, journalists and researchers, people with 33% of disabilities and large families and members of the Association of Friends of the Museum, ICOM, ANABAD and museum associations.
Accreditation of all circumstances is necessary.

It is a building that replaced a Muslim mosque in the 13th century.. It was built as a Mudejar building with a basilica plan and three naves., with central apse.

The naves are separated by caliphal horseshoe arches. They are supported by pillars to which columns with reused capitals are attached. (six of Visigothic origin).
The chapel is plateresque style, The dome of the apse is the work of Alonso de Covarrubias and the altarpiece by Diego de Velasco.

The frescoes that cover the walls (s. XIII) They have marked Romanesque and Hispano-Arab influences.
